Registration for the Educator Externship Project

2023 is NOW OPEN

We have provided opportunities for over 1200 educators to interact with business, industry and military professionals since 2012.  We will continue the tradition in 2023.

What to Expect in Summer 2023

  • In-person with business, industry, military professionals 

  • Hybrid professional development:  In-person PD, self-paced PD, and live, virtual PD

  • Pre-recorded videos to externships and professional development

Externships Geared Towards Your Subject Area

 Our clusters are:

  • Construction/Trade, Math

  • HealthScience/BioScience, Math, Science

  • Advanced Manufacturing/Robotics, Math

  • IT/Cyber, Math

  • Culinary Arts, Math, Science

  • Aerospace, Math, Science

Counselors & Administrators

  • Connection to Programs of Study

  • Development of Parent/Study Presentation on Programs of Study & Industry Connection

  • Development of Industry Partnerships for Student Externships

Clusters are used to match what you teach (or will be) to which companies and organizations you will visit and learn about. When you register, you will need to pick a cluster and one of the weeks when an option exists.

Benefits when you complete the requirements:

  • $500 Stipend

  • 26 CEUs awarded by ESC-20

  • 6hr G.T. Update

In order to receive the $500 stipend, you’ll need to complete the PD requirements by July 31, 2023.  (See below)

  • Learn how to integrate College, Career, Military Readiness skills into your lessons

  • Improve your T-TESS evaluation with activities based on the externships

  • Learn how your subject area aligns with the Programs of Study offered at your school

  • Interact with teachers in your subject area

Completion Requirements

  1. Complete the Registration and Eligibility Processing (see below)

  2. Complete the required self-paced online preparation modules

  3. Attend the scheduled, in-person and virtual externships

  4. Attend the in-person and virtual PD

  5. Submit a lesson plan

  6. Complete the end-of-externship evaluation survey

  7. Complete the above by July 31, 2023

Eligibility & Participation Requirements

Middle and High School STEM, CTE, MATH, SCIENCE, Counselors, and Administrators employed in a public/charter school in one of the 13 WSA counties Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Frio, Gillespie, Guadalupe, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, McMullen, Medina and Wilson are encouraged to register.

Registered for Selective Service

Males born after 1965 must meet Military Selective Service registration requirements

Authorized to Work in the US

Individuals must be citizens or non-citizens authorized to work in the United States

Work in one of the 13 counties serviced by WSA

Application Process

As part of the application process you’ll need to provide evidence of your eligibility and upload supporting documents, some of which is sensitive information. Here’s why: The Teacher Externship program is primarily funded by federal and state grant funds which have guidelines we must follow to document your eligibility for the program. Any personally identifiable information (PII) you submit to us will be safeguarded in accordance with federal and state guidelines.

Examples of Documents You May be Asked to Provide

  • Driver’s License or State Issued ID

  • Social Security Card

  • Selective Service registration letter

  • US Passport

  • Birth Certificate Employment verification

1. Download and review the Eligibility Documentation Instructions PDF below. Pay special attention to the OR and AND when reviewing options from columns A, B, & C.

2. Download the “Authorization to Work” form below, type your information into the form, and save a copy to your computer. Note: The form refers to program participants as “job seekers.” For the purposes of Teacher Externship program, the job seeker is the individual applying to participate in the program.

3. Save a digital copy or take a quality photo of the forms of identification you selected from the Authorization to Work form (i.e., passport, driver’s license, social security card).

4. Click the button below to complete your application. You will be prompted to upload the Authorization to Work form, copies of your identification, and other eligibility documentation (if applicable). Once your eligibility has been determined, you will be contacted with next steps.

The benefits include:

  • Interactions with individuals from three or more companies

  • Become a Workforce Ambassador (certificate included)

  • Participate in an extensive lesson planning and instruction

  • Additional professional development on related topics (e.g., digital badging)

  • $500 stipend for completing the externship requirements

  • Continuing education units from ESC-20

  • 6hr G.T. Update
